What if we cut each other some slack?
Apr 3 2008, 4:57 PM EDT In my perfect universe, we would all assume positive intent when people did things. I'm not totally Polly Anna. I know there are people our there who can be haters, but what if we came from a point of view of supporting each other - and cutting each other some slack. 6 out of 7 found this valuable. Do you? |

RE: What if we cut each other some slack?
Apr 20 2008, 10:55 AM EDT Hey, nothing wrong with being a Polly Anna! I have found that when you assume the best in people, they will rise to your expectations and even exceed them. For one thing, we can never know another person's intent any more than they can KNOW your intent. You can only know your own intent and how others impact you. (For a quick read and a great discussion of "intent" vs. "impact" see: Difficult Conversations: How to discuss what matters most.") Secondly, so what if their intent is negative? If you assume positive and react in that manner, you are going to totally befuddlebum them. That's SO satisfying and sometimes you actually win them over that way. Now, I'm curious about your comment re: "cutting each other some slack." Can you unpack that a bit? Do you find this valuable? |

RE: What if we cut each other some slack?
Apr 28 2008, 2:12 AM EDT Unpacking the slack :) My observations have been that there are staff who spend a lot of time judging other staff and not seeking to support each other. So, when mistakes are made or issues arise, staff don't trust each other enough to work through the issues effectively. Would we be bigger risk takers and problem solvers if we felt like we would receive support from each other regardless of the outcome? Do you find this valuable? |
